Why

Mental health is in bad shape worldwide.

Experts around the world all agree:
mental health has deteriorated further. The numbers are staggering. Today, nearly 1 billion people worldwide live with mental health problems.

In a way, these statistics are not surprising.

Today, as a society, we are overworked, overburdened, and overstimulated by the demands of everyday life. We eat too much or unhealthy, sleep too little, sit a lot and ignore what our bodies really need to function properly.

The modern western lifestyle has wreaked havoc on our physical health, leading not only to physical problems but also, as has now been proven, to a proliferation in mental health problems.

The two traditional approaches to treating mental health problems are psychotherapy or counseling, with or without medication, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, sleeping pills, and mood stabilizers.

What is interesting is that for many years the medical field hasn’t fully recognized the connection between mood and food.

Only recently has a scientific link been made between nutrition and mental health problems.

Historically, nutrition research has primarily focused on how the foods we eat affect our physical health, rather than our mental health. For a long time, as a research team recently put it, the influence of nutrition on feelings of happiness and mental well-being was “virtually ignored”. Over the years, a growing body of scientific research has provided clear evidence as to how food can affect our mood / clear clues about the ways food can affect our mood.

“Although the brain accounts for only 2 percent of our body weight, it consumes up to 40 percent of the nutrients we get through our diet.”

For whom

ANYONE WHO IS NOT FEELING WELL MENTALLY OR WANTS TO AVOID MENTAL PROBLEMS

Personal counseling on how to improve or support mental health through nutrition can be very helpful.

Even if you don’t (yet) have a mental illness or are in treatment, improving your diet can, for example, help you cope better with stress – an issue we all deal with these days – or increase your energy levels.

When faced with an acute stressor, our fight-flight response is activated to help us survive. Overcoming the stressor becomes top priority and all food sources are geared towards the functions that ensure our survival.

However, if our fight-flight response remains activated for a long period of time or is constantly activated, such as when we are under chronic stress, our body can become exhausted trying to overcome that stressful state.

Think of the lifestyle that many of us have: our days are often filled with stress from waking up to going to bed – from work pressures, financial pressures, traffic jams to existential threats or pandemics. Combine that with a poor diet and you can see that we may not be mentally resilient enough to take on the constant barrage of challenges.

Improving your diet for better mental health also leads to other positive outcomes, including weight loss (if desired), improving in your immune system, blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, and insomnia.
